A Word from Wenz

One of the things I love most about playing in the ANZ Championship is the chance to match up against our mates from across the ditch.
 
The launch of a trans-Tasman competition in 2008 heralded a new era for netball as our New Zealand teams went head-to-head against our Aussie counterparts at franchise level for the first time.
 
With six years in the ranks of our predecessor the Southern Sting under my belt at the time, I was lucky enough to have experienced my fair share of success on the national scene – earning a place in the National Bank Cup final every year and hoisting the trophy aloft as champions four times.

I found the impending switch to an international concept hugely exciting and it has continued to exceed my expectations.
 
As an athlete, you’re always striving to be the best so I enjoy the challenge the Australian teams present – even more so when we rise above it and secure victory.
 
That’s definitely the plan tomorrow as we welcome our first Australian opponent, the West Coast Fever, to “our house” at ILT Stadium Southland.
 
Our unbeaten streak to date in 2016 has been a fantastic start to the season, but as a team we are refusing to get ahead of ourselves. Confidence is high but so is our determination to build on each performance. We know we have much more to give out there on the court and trust me, training has been brutal in preparation for the task ahead.
 
So bring on the challenge of the Aussies! I can’t wait.

• The Fever has won four of the past five meetings between the sides.
• The Steel and Fever have previously met in Invercargill just once and the Steel won that match 46-44 in Round 1, 2010.
• The Fever has played the Steel in New Zealand on four previous occasions with the Steel holding a three wins to one loss record.
• Caitlin Bassett shot her 4000th ANZ Championship goal in Round 4 against the Swifts becoming the first Australian ANZ Championship player to reach this milestone and just the second behind the Firebirds’ Jamaican shooter Romelda Aiken.
• The Steel has the third best attacking record in the ANZ Championship after four rounds with 61.5 goals per match. The Fever has the fourth best attacking record with 58.25 goals per match.
